  1. Comcast was throttling every video streaming service but their own in-house service, which pretty much withered and died after the FCC slapped them down. Netflix and Google were the biggest advocates for Net Neutrality back then.

And more recently Verizon throttled a California fire department’s data during a crisis.

  2. Good show, guys.

I feel like the habitat nerf in Stellaris is justified. They were introduced in 1.6 with Utopia, but from 1.6-1.9 you could time your unity generation with a beeline to battleships and fortresses and grab them as your second ascension perk. You could get them early enough, genetically modify a ‘strong’, ‘very strong’, or ‘industrious’ species to get extra minerals (by adding strong to an industrious species or vice-versa), and start generating so many minerals that you could start snowballing industry habitats before switching over to science ones. It allowed the player to run away with games pretty quickly and also gave zero reason to tech/perk your way to ringworlds because habitats were so much more cost/time/research effective.

On the topic of espionage, I don’t understand why the RPG elements that have been creeping into 4X for years now haven’t found their way into espionage. Send the agent out and then you make narrative choices that culminate in some sort of result, be it a stolen tech, industrial sabotage, murder, or whatever. It would be a much more interesting approach than stealing a tech every X turns.

  3. nice show again, thanks a lot!

did anybody of the crew have heard news about predestination? if not, could you reach out and see what they are planning? no updates there for month now. thanks in advance.

ahhh, Tags in steam….total bullshit…..blocking jrpg and anime and guess what….now all the anime crap is just tagged “indie” “rpg” or other unspecific stuff.

  4. Changes in UE law to enforce film and music industry its pissing me so much…And i feel helpless about it. So thanks that you put that info in show.
In my opinion if somebody do not want to hear about steam, ue or net neutrality, they may jump to next topic. You give timings information.

  5. Enjoyed the show, completely agree with Troy on the copyright issues. Copyright was meant to incentivize creators to produce more material, not to ensure their financial well being for generations to come. It should never be “transferable”. Crafting the laws that would make that possible would indeed be tricky but I think 20 years is more than enough to start with.

Also agree about the net neutrality situation. It just lets corporate bigwigs dictate how people and companies can access the internet without any transparency. I firmly believe that if there is an exploit, it will be found and taken advantage of. Why do we have to learn the hard way what doesn’t work over and over again? Greed, btw, is the answer.

But I do have a bone to pick with you Nate. You said that Endless Legend is your favorite 4X, that’s fine, but when you had an opportunity to say why, you said that it was just because it is. That was a TERRIBLE answer. You are in charge of a 4X gaming news and review site! You should easily be able to state the 2 or 3 things that make EL a your favorite over all the others (that you have played of course). I chalk it up to being tired and wanting to get done with the podcast, but really, you should be able to and should articulate (with or without cusses) that answer.

I am fine with salty language as long as it isn’t overly used, isn’t used as an ad hominem, if there is a warning at the start of the podcast, if it makes it more enjoyable and fun to produce and/or brings in more listeners.

    1. Heh, sure sure. I’ve said many times over x more times over why. We’ve made whole shows about it. I was just trying to keep the answer short, but I’ll tell you here.

      1. It has the best lore for any game 4X that I have ever played.
      2. It has the best music… For any/every game I have ever played. EVER.
      3. It is beautiful to look at.
      4. I love the setting.
      5. I love the exploration.
      6. The diplomacy is finally solid.
      7. The factions are amazing and they all play differently.
      8. I love the tech progression.
      9. I love the art and animation of the game.
      10. I love the way the game played and the fantastic UI.
      11. I like the espionage in the game.
      12. I love the winter mechanic.
      13. I love the quest system.

      I can keep going…

      50. The combat grew on me.

I agree about the language, that’s why I keep it clean and we keep the Weekly eXchange clean, and if we have a show with “salty language” in the future, I will make it known as such (only on a StraX and it’ll be toned down). The good thing is that insults were not leveled and traded, it was just used to accentuate a point (by mark). That’s also why I don’t record for YouTube or MP… I like to play and profane… Not insult, and certainly not attack, but profane… It’s my outlet.

      Thanks for listening.

  6. About the “link tax”, I think it’s less about propping up US companies, and more about getting European news companies some of their pie.

  7. Agree with Nate on Age Of Wonders: Planetfall. I watched the video, and yes, it looks alot like XCOM, but the research tree looks alot like a space game. Are you giving away keys?

  8. Unfortunately, those articles passed. There’s supposed to be a final vote next January, but it’ll almost certainly be ratified. Just wait, though, till all those companies and “artists” realize how much free advertising they’ve lost when people stop linking to them. ;)

    1. Yeah, Frank. That’s exactly how I feel. It reminds me of all those years Nintendo resisted Let’s Play videos for its games on YouTube while other game companies embraced it completely. That was so much free advertising those other companies got, it had to help their sales.
