  1. Great to hear some love for Dominions 5. Kudos to Micah for actually playing the game. Nate you really should try it… New is not necessarily better as Micah said.

  2. Nice surprise to hear Micah on the podcast, I like the format of having contributors on from time to time (or as often as you can manage, anyway. :)

I have to agree with Troy about the ES2 faction names. They all sounded kind of “meh” to me. Just pick something evocative like “The Outsiders” or “The First” (after all, they’re older than the Endless!) and be done with it. I took a look at the list of submitted names on the Amplitude forums, and honestly… bleh. Nothing on the first couple pages really grabbed me at all. This being the internet, there was of course a Faction McFactionface, or something to that effect.

Normally I don’t notice the little blips/speedups in the audio. This week was definitely an exception; I checked my internet connection before I noticed that others were hearing the same thing. Hopefully mother nature cooperates in the future – it was quite distracting at times.

That aside, great show as always. Thanks guys!

  3. Congratulations, Nate, your Steam proposal just wiped Stellar Monarch, Space Tyrant and Dawn of Andromeda from the internet.

      • There is no situation to fix, most people who care about the genre know about them, they just have a glut of strategy games to pick from that they like more. And I’d be more inclined to press Steam to use some machine learning, for Vishna’s sake! Still, I do mostly get recommendations of things that I at least have a passing interest on, but I still have my time and money more than reserved for months.
If I agreed there was something to fix, there still wouldn’t be an easy solution. Demand 10000€ upfront, there go starting Polish devs (say). Demand a publisher, Amplitude just had a lot less money for Endless Legend. Curate everything with strict guidelines, assholes will still find loopholes. Do it with soft ones, and people will be arguing about biases (like the iOS store).
I do think your proposal has more merit than most others, which my rushed reply didn’t communicate, but if your game is not on Steam, it basically doesn’t exist – you have frequent posts on r/GoG on whether it’s a scam, because it gives you no Steam keys. Any proposal should carefully consider that there are good niche games that are happy to sell a small number of copies and that maybe we shouldn’t lose that.

      • $10k, $1k, $100 so on and so forth. My point was that the system is broken and $100 is just stupid. The number needs to be higher to ward off the scammers, asset flippers and general shit products. There are ways to address this further and I plan to talk about it further on the next show with the idea that Valve has to fix Steam.

      • It’s true we would have lost certain games. I think Space Tyrant could have crowd funded the money Nate suggests, but yeah, the other two might not have. And as much as I respect Chris Kozmic for what he’s done with Stellar Monarch, I have to ask what the community would really be losing out on? Less than 10k people on Steam owned that game before SteamSpy was taken down. It wasn’t having much of an impact, and I have to wonder if Itch.io or GameJolt wouldn’t have served Chris just as well (which btw Chris, get your games up on those services, man!).

Anyway, $10k is a high bar. And there’s no guarantee that it would work. However, allowing people to upload anything without the kind of algorithms used by Amazon or Netflix to help people sort through massive amounts of media, all content creators suffer. Valve isn’t interested in helping the customer, so as time goes on, quality games will get harder and harder to find until people just give up altogether and switch to something that has better curation like Nintendo.

  4. Don’t think I’ve ever seemed to be affected by the whole crap games being listed, as I just don’t use Steam to *find* the games. For the most part I use sites like explorminate and also pay attention in all the website forums (and yes Steam discussion forums as well) I either watch or in which I participate.

I definitely agree that the problem is there, and maybe I’ve just sub-consciously avoided it with the way I use Steam. But I don’t think so, just looking through lists of games hasn’t really been a thing for me since decades ago when you would see shelves of PC games in stores. When It’s time to buy a game on Steam I already know what I’m looking for when I go to the store. I actually have Steam set to open directly to my library rather than the store when I launch the interface, so I rarely even see the Steam store.
