Have we reached the peak of 4X games? It’s a discussion we’ve been having here at eXplorminate for a while now. It gets heated at times, but everyone agrees that there are areas of the genre that have yet to be explored.
Well, we now have one less request: a 4X game set in the grimdark Warhammer 40k universe is here! Warhammer 40000: Gladius – Relics of War will be made by Proxy Studios, the makers of Pandora, and published by Slitherine. If you’ve been waiting for this as long as we have, we know you’re excited. In this game you’ll get to play as one of four unique factions:
- The green skinned Orks, bent on destruction, carnage and going faster!
- The Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) that make up the backbone of the Imperium. They are the bulk of humanity’s forces and stand against the the Emperor’s enemies.
- The Necrons – an emotionless, unstoppable force of doom that wants nothing more than to wipe out all sentient life because it has none of its own.
- The Space Marines are the sons of the Emperor of humanity and the fist of the Imperium. They stand fast against the heretic, the xenos, and the worshippers of chaos. They are the best that humanity has to offer.
But that’s not all! This is a 4X and that brings its own set of rules. Proxy Studios are known for the more combative types of 4X games. Which if you ask us, is actually a good thing. In the grimdark lore of WH40k, the Empire of Man is on the verge of collapse, and there is little other than war and strife to occupy humanity.
Play as one of four iconic Warhammer factions (Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks or Necrons), each with their own unique playstyle and technology tree. Explore a randomly generated world filled with special features and threatening wildlife that can crush your troop’s morale. Secure control of powerful ancient artefacts to grant you an edge against rival factions.
Construct cities, buildings and fortifications to expand your empire and produce an army to vanquish your foes. Harvest resources and research new technologies to fuel and upgrade your machinery of war.
Progress through a different storyline with each faction as their destiny on Gladius Prime, a world tainted by the warp, unfolds. In the end, when all the dust has settled, only one faction can emerge victorious.
Command a wide array of devastating weaponry, issue city edicts and deploy tactical operations. Recruit hero units that possess distinct special abilities and can be equipped with items, ranging from advanced grenades to mighty relics of the past. As they become more and more powerful with each rank, these heroes turn into true champions of your cause.
That’s a lot to chew on, but we’re are hoping this title does well because we’d love to see the various Eldar, Tyranids, Tau, Chaos and additional human factions make it into this game. The last time we had so much variety set in WH40k was the Dark Crusade expansion for Dawn of War I.
We wish Slitherine et al good luck, and hope that all of our readers pick up a copy. These are exciting times we live in.
