  1. Haha, I have to agree with Troy on Interstellar Space Genesis, it’s just a collection of three of the most generic words imaginable. That said, it’s hard to come up with a good name because all the obvious choices (Space Empires, Galactic Civilizations, Star Ruler, etc) are taken. It takes some inventiveness.

  2. oh man, why discuss minutes about the new name of project space sector.
i’m totally with troy but will just use a punchline: don’t like the new name cause it has no meaning.
    there, that’s it :)

    excellent show as always, thanks!

    • Heh, well I didn’t want to just sound dismissive. I wanted to lay out a case why I felt that way because I do respect the creative process of bringing a dream to life. I hoped to avoid offending the Space Sector guys by showing I had really thought about it a lot and had personal experience in these sorts of endeavors. :)

  3. Sword Of The Stars was a good game, but II was awful. Add to that the forum had the devs treating people like crap, unless they agreed with them and kissed the ring. This encouraged forum vets to also be unpleasant.

  4. Speaking about “love for SF pulp”: have you tried an amazing and very climatic mod for Stellaris – Star Trek New Horizons? It’s already very, very detailed and close to beta state. Long time I had waited for Birth of the Federation 2 but the mod has already exceeded my expectations so I recommend it with clear conscience – Stellaris feels very fresh with it and in some areas, eg. designg ships, like another game.

  5. Totally agree with Troy as far as Space Sector name goes. Bland is a pretty serious sin when it comes to standing out from the crowd for those not otherwise in the know (which will be most people). I know they didn’t want to try and “cash in” on the Space Sector brand, as it were, but it’s hard to imagine that they couldn’t come up with something a little catchier.

I wish them the best of luck and I’ll likely pick up the game myself whatever the title is.

  6. XCOM2 baby! Nate, I put the blame squarely on your head for getting me hooked on this. I bounced hard off of XCOM EU/EW and had no intention of going for 2, but after hearing you talk about it on WeX a few times, I decided to give it a go recently, and oh wow, now it’s become one of my favorites. (So…thank you! :-)

Regarding your comments about Paradox DLC continually making changes to fundamental game mechanics, I’m totally with you on that. Very frustrating. I don’t have infinite amounts of time to keep relearning the same complex game over and over. Similar to you, I’ve reached that point now with both Stellaris and EU4 where I’ve just decided to wait it out for a while.

    • Sorry/not-sorry about XCOM2. It has been my favorite game since launch, and that is a problem. When I’m in a XCOM2 mood, everything else falls by the wayside. I actually have to put it down. I was playing a modded game and then Long War 2 came out. Oh man. I loved the first one so much. LW2 is even better, for me (YMMV though), and I ended up redoing my mod-list and tossing all but a few gameplay mods and downloading more voicemods. I have A LOT of them (the voice ones) actually. I’m very excited by War of the Chosen, but I will have to redo my mods… AGAIN. I’m not excited about that.

As far as Paradox titles, I buy the DLC on sale at 50% off or more, and wait. One day, I will pick them up again (CK2/EU4/Stellaris) when the game settles in. For example, update 1.8 is going to revamp major systems yet again. They aren’t adding new ones as much as redoing existing ones.

Oh well, ES2 is amazing and I’m loving every bit of it, but then again, I was a huge fan of ES2 and EL, so, like always, YMMV!

Oh yea, thanks for listening to the WeX and giving us feedback. We really appreciate it.

      • Yeah definitely hoping War of the Chosen doesn’t break all of those existing great quality of life mods, that would be painful. Also yes, very good advice re: Paradox DLC sales. As for ES2, it’s been sitting in my Steam account since release but I think I’m going to wait for at least one more significant update patch before I finally dive in. (Hey anyway, XCOM2 is keeping me plenty busy right now!)

  7. The Endless Space 1 soundtrack is on Spotify, so you could always just run it in the background while you play 2. Sort of a workaround but would still let you get achievements while listening to it.

As far as Project Space Sector/Interstellar Space: Genesis is concerned, I found this snippet on their official forums by the developer:

“The “Interstellar Space” part is connected to an important mechanic of the game linked to the discovery of new objects in space. And, we also like it! :) The “Genesis” part will be the first chapter of what we envisage to be a series with two expansion packs.”

Regardless of the explanation, there’s nothing intuitive about the name.

That said, it does look interesting. I’m a huge fan of ship/unit designers. I like procedural planet generation. And custom races for me are a must. But my main issue is that I really wish developers would stop inexorably tying their games to a 20 year old relic that the majority of contemporary 4x gamers played in middle school.

  8. Troy is usually dead on with his predictions but he was off re: the Triumph acquisition by Paradox. I was wondering why he was so certain that this acquisition would never happen. Given that they were able to Eugen Systems (most recently, developers of Steel Division), when I heard Troy say that Paradox couldnt/wouldnt acquire Triumph, I thought he may have some inside info that he may wish to share. ;)
